You must be a real friend to have this link. This page is for the friends I want to impress into getting No Jewels, a poetry book and soundtrack (not poems but soul music soundtrack)  a book about  selfishness interrupting a child growing up courtesy of Flowered Concrete.

Already getting love from Okayplayer, Monifa Lemons (Watering Hole), Talib Kweli (added the book to his book club), Greg Tate (famed cultural critic & writer), Patricia Jones (poetry legend), SoulTracks… and, now, you!

Below is an excerpt and to the right music while you read.

Drop $12, $15 or $20 to get the  PDF, music & orders a “physical” copy of the book, includes shipping.

Moving Pictures

Go Groove (Cadillac, Beemer)

I started writing this after finishing a show in Baltimore. The show coincided with the Baltimore Uprising. I wanted to discuss how language can be ill-used and how love can be found in chaos. B’more was full of miscues and craziness. Yet, everywhere I looked love was in full bloom. That meant everything to me

Oooh Baby (Kills)

Cheryl’s is an eatery I love. Marcos throws amazing events. I was home, in Brooklyn, hosting sections of the National Black Writers Conference. Yep, the band Ruckus are amazing canvas makers!

Let Me Love You Down w/Tulips

In Raleigh trying to pull out my inner Levert meets Gap Band meets Ready For The World. But for my bridge toss in some loving-you-forever poems like Pablo Neruda or Quincy Troupe would do.

Home Is Where The Hatred Is

“Home Is Where The Hatred Is” is a timely tune. It is about about drug abuse and its effects on a person. But it can be translated to detail any form of personal distress and loss that has emotional toll. We did this song to illustrate how poignant the tune is and how poetry and songwriting are related. Beautiful words are just that. And yes that is the legendary Onaje Allan-Gumbs on piano and the great Jeffrey Smith on guitar/brass.

DANCE REMIX

We dropped a serious dance beat then slipped blues chords and slick sax over the drums to re-imagine the song. All because my mom remembered that this was dance music in the 70s. I did not want to be the Midnight Band but wanted inject how we view dance music. Still holding onto my love of blues, jazz and soul

Strong w/N—- At Night

I always I think the Blues is my birthright. Field songs are my ancestry. This was an attempt to bridge the genres to a modern audience while telling a story about our past.

Tulips

The sister was standing there and I was hosting the event. I wanted her to know men do love unfettered.

Read With Me

Malo baño, conmigo prima en Sábado

with the water in the bathroom running hot then cold there is sound to muffle the off-beat bump of skin

and i think of steamy TV-scenes as north stars to guide her grabbing hold with the water in the bathroom running hot then cold

an older sibling declares two cousins play wet & unclothed this ties me to a relative’s lips and hips in ways i was told are exciting

with the water in the bathroom running hot then cold there is sound to muffle off-beat bump of skin

we are steaming in a shimmer of fear that leads to uneasiness but instructs are clear ”play until i come back or until he is done”

while the water in the bathroom runs hot then cold again there is sound to muffle the clumsy skin & wetness

and i act like the movie men do when their faces are scrunching while the water in the bathroom runs hot then cold again

i press and she forwards all movement no rhythm to please the supervising-adult – a locked door & darkness —

while the water in the bathroom runs hot then cold again there is sound to muffle the touching skin & wetness

it ends when she calls: dinner is ready now stop and keep this quiet

No Jewels

Nothing to offer

But remembers (without whys)

To a Fall I raked

Bagged and placed on the

Curb — cliché-close to the cans

Waiting for trash day

Refuse

Never feel afraid

To find refuge and freedom

From terrible hands

And demon minds

Selfish love

That hates

How you love

Yourself
